Clover is the playable character and main protagonist of Undertale Yellow. They are the seventh human to fall into the Underground and the sixth SOUL[1] gathered by Asgore Dreemurr in the Pacifist endings. Embarking on a quest to locate the previous five humans who climbed up Mt. Ebott and were never seen again, Clover ventures into the Underground.

Notably, unlike Frisk, Clover does not seem to have a bond with the first human. Due to this, the game automatically uses Clover as the protagonist's name instead of prompting them to name the fallen child.

Profile[]

Appearance[]

Clover is a human child of fair complexion and short brown hair. Official art portrays Clover with yellow irises.

Clover wears a brown long-sleeved t-shirt beneath a dark brown vest and dark blue pants, presumably denim, girded by a dark reddish-brown belt with a gold buckle. They wear a pair of brown shoes and a light brown cowboy hat with a dark brown hatband. Around their neck, Clover sports a yellow bandana with a blue dot pattern (though some official art depicts it as a checkered blue and yellow bandana).

Background[]

Clover's background is left ambiguous; however, they were most likely an honest child. This is proven when their main reason for jumping into the Underground was for the five humans preceding them. While never explicitly stated, it is implied that Clover may have an abusive or overly demanding family, this may have resulted in them becoming independent at a young age. It's also possible that Clover is somehow used to arguments and prefers to resolve conflict, as shown at the end of the Pacifist Route where Clover seems to be trying to drown out the argument between Martlet, Ceroba, and Starlo and ultimately gives up their SOUL to resolve it.

Personality[]

While Clover is largely a silent protagonist (though much less so than Frisk), elements of their personality are shown or implied at several points. In notable contrast with Frisk, most dialogue options for Clover generally depict what Clover is actually saying, as opposed to Frisk where a choice would imply dialogue. The dialogue itself is actually quite interesting; there will often be exclamation marks or word choice that imply further personality. It seems that Clover is fairly nonchalant throughout their journey, It also seems notable that there will sometimes be just one dialogue choice for Clover, possibly indicating that Clover has stronger willpower than Frisk and that their desires can unknowingly supersede the will of the player (as of yet, the relationship between Clover and the player is ambiguous). This may indicate that Clover is less indecisive than Frisk and that the choices that Clover would canonically make within the world of Undertale Yellow are less numerous because Clover has more of a solid personality than Frisk does. There is also usually an option for silence for Clover, so dialogue options for Clover are even more limited than what one might think. Generally, Clover has a strong sense of justice and a drive to do what they perceive to be the right thing, with some variations depending on the route. It can also be inferred that Clover has a strong sense of humor, as many descriptions and dialogue options are somehow comedic or joking, an example being telling Flowey that their name is "Gun-Hat". Clover can also be shown to be largely selfless and sometimes very determined to achieve a particular goal. This is most strongly represented at the end of the Pacifist Route, where Clover gives up their SOUL to resolve the conflict between Ceroba, Martlet, and Starlo.

Main Story[]

Pacifist Route[]

Clover falls into the Ruins and becomes guided by Toriel. Toriel takes them through the original lever puzzles shown in Undertale. When at the second lever puzzle, switching the tampered lever causes Clover to fall into the Dark Ruins. Clover soon meets Flowey, who introduces the mechanics of dodging and saving to Clover.

From there, they traverse the Ruins with Flowey in a peaceful manner, sparing every monster along the way, and solving the puzzles. Eventually, they meet Dalv at the end of the Dark Ruins and have a battle with him. Dalv quickly realizes that Clover isn't there to harm him and Clover becomes friends with Dalv. Dalv escorts Clover to the exit of the Dark Ruins.

After leaving the Dark Ruins, Clover ends up in Snowdin, before shortly running into Martlet fixing a puzzle. Clover explores Snowdin, ending up in the Honeydew Resort, but Clover soon encounters Martlet once again at her lookout station. This forces a confrontation between the two, resulting in a battle. Being unable to bring herself to hurt Clover, Martlet ends the battle and ends up offering to guide them back to the surface. Together, they board the U.G. Aviator, and ride through Waterfall, unfortunately crashing into the Caves. As a result, Clover becomes separated from Martlet.

At the end of the Caves, Clover ends up in the Dunes, and traverses through its dangers before Martlet catches up with them once more. Now together, they they enter the Wild East, where Clover is taken by the Feisty Five and Martlet becomes jailed. During Clover's Deputy Training, they get the Wild Revolver after Starlo buys it for them from Blackjack. After Clover's Deputy Training, Starlo gets told off by his posse, resulting in a showdown between Clover and Starlo. Clover outlasts Starlo before Ceroba arrives, and Ceroba berates Starlo for attempting to take Clover's life. Starlo goes to apologize to the other members of the Feisty Five. Afterwards, Martlet approaches Clover, now free, and informs them of her departure to Snowdin. With this in mind, Clover nears the entrance into the Steamworks where Ceroba and Starlo wait. Ceroba explains her daughter Kanako's disappearance to Clover and asks Clover to accompany her, while Starlo stays back to watch the town. Now teamed-up, Clover and Ceroba traverse the Steamworks, solving multiple puzzles and encountering many robots. This includes AXIS, one of Chujin's many inventions, whom the duo are forced to avoid on multiple occasions. Eventually, AXIS manages to corner Clover, resulting in a conflict where Ceroba is locked out of the room.

Eventually, Clover outlasts AXIS, and Ceroba manages to enter the room. Clover defeats AXIS by draining him of his battery. Afterwards, Ceroba presents the machine you made at the beginning of the Steamworks, of which AXIS falls in love with. Before AXIS takes the machine away, he whitelists Ceroba and Clover to prevent him from attacking them again.

After beating AXIS, Clover and Ceroba make their way to the elevator at the end of Steamworks. However, Starlo quickly arrives to confront Ceroba on items found within her house, and Clover is taken back to the Wild East by Ed. There, Clover reunites with Martlet, and The Feisty Four reveal to Clover that Ceroba had ulterior motives the whole time, which causes Martlet and Clover to investigate her home. There they find a secret room underneath the table and as well find tapes on Chujin, who had been working to create a mass population of Boss Monsters using a special serum extracted from a Monster with a human SOUL.

After finding Ceroba's secret, Clover and Martlet together go to New Home, and find Starlo confronting Ceroba. The situation quickly escalates and Starlo tells Martlet to escape with Clover. Ceroba reacts quickly and attacks Martlet and Starlo, before initiating a fight with Clover. After defeating Ceroba, Clover has a choice of either sparing her, or killing her. If Clover chooses to spare Ceroba, both Starlo and Martlet wake up, and talk of Clover's safety with Ceroba. Slowly, Clover realizes the inability for them to leave, and is shown giving their ITEMS to the trio. Finally, Clover willingly gives up their SOUL, becoming the sixth human SOUL captured, as well as ending the Pacifist Route.

Genocide Route[]

Similarly, like in the Pacifist Route, Clover falls into the Ruins and meets Toriel, who guides them. However, as a result of one of the puzzles being broken, Clover falls into the Dark Ruins. Instead of sparing all of the enemies encountered, Clover instead kills them all, resulting in many different changes within the game.

After killing Dalv and the other monsters residing in the Dark Ruins, Clover enters Snowdin, where most of the residents have likely evacuated. Flowey tells them that nobody will know what they did in the Dark Ruins and can pretend like nothing happened. But once again, they kill everyone they encounter, excluding Martlet, who manages to escape. Clover takes the U.G. Aviator, which once again, crashes into the Caves. After exiting the Caves, Clover enters the Dunes, where the slaughter continues. Before reaching Wild East, Martlet confronts Clover and tries to empathize with them, however Clover ignores and threatens her at gunpoint, causing her to retreat once more.

Clover enters the Wild East, encountering Starlo, who challenges them to a duel. Starlo, no matter if he wins or loses, gets shot down by Clover. Ceroba, after escorting the other monsters out of the Wild East, comes back to bring Starlo back, only to find him on his deathbed. After which, Ceroba attacks Clover. Ceroba still eventually falls to Clover, and they continue their journey to the Steamworks.

During the Vengeance Route, Clover's desire to uphold justice manifests in the form of a desire for VENGEANCE for the deaths of the five humans, particularly against Asgore. Clover primarily becomes a lot more serious and impatient, as is especially demonstrated by how they forego their usual comedic descriptions for those that are more factual and direct.

Though Clover is much more aggressive, their violent behavior is only directed to those that they consider to be 'enemies' (being monsters which either attack them or otherwise hinder their progress). As such, they are willing to let people go provided they surrender or are not an obstacle (this can best be seen by how Clover refuses to fight or kill Mo in the Steamworks, even while holding Mo at gunpoint). However, this quality slowly diminishes over the course of the route, being lost completely during the Axis encounter. Furthermore, it is during this encounter with Axis that Clover's complete desire for vengeance, hate, and rage are put on display, as seen when their LOVE increases significantly after Axis regretfully reveals how he had to neutralize the previous human before he ultimately meets his destruction at Clover's hands.

Flowey arrives just in time to see the aftermath of the battle and begins to see Clover's dramatic shift in personality. At this point, Clover outright ignores Flowey and quickly moves along to Hotland. Flowey tries to put some sense into Clover, but they're quick to dismiss it. This dramatic turn of events, combined with Clover's vengeful side, anger, and impatience only confirms what they believe in their mind to be right: All monsters are their enemies.

This rage continues on into their battle with Martlet, who states that she has been taught all her life that humans are dangerous yet she chose to try to see the good in them, which proved all for naught in the end. After Martlet injects herself with a determination serum later revealed to have been stolen from Alphys, a battle between her and Clover ensues. However, in the end, Clover defeats Martlet; additionally, the aftereffects of the serum cause Martlet to fall down and turn to dust, maxing out Clover's LOVE.

Flowey then appears and reprimands Clover for their actions, telling them that the Castle will now be on full lockdown. In the heat of the moment, Flowey demands for them to destroy the Castle walls and to get him "his souls," which ultimately confirms Flowey's true objective: to gather all six Souls and become God. This slip of Flowey's tongue is the last straw to break Clover's back, fully confirming in their head that ALL monsters are evil, including Flowey. With all the LOVE at their disposal, Clover is now able to override Flowey's control over the SAVE file and prevent him from attacking them directly. He tries to escape, but to no avail. Now helpless, Flowey finally snaps and laughs maniacally, yelling at Clover about how much he hates them, how miserable he was around them, and how much he loved watching them die over and over. In a fit of rage, Clover kills Flowey with eight shots from their revolver.

With Flowey, Martlet, and the majority of monsterkind dead, Clover's final objective is to kill the king and avenge the other five humans who had their SOULs stolen. Clover makes their way through the capital and into the king's castle to find Asgore somberly staring out the window from his main garden. He looks Clover's way and explains how he wishes that he and them could handle matters more peacefully. Asgore finally finishes by saying that Clover's fate has been sealed ever since they've entered his kingdom and launches his trident at them, only for it to uselessly shatter against Clover's soul. They charge up all the Determination in their soul and fire a powerful beam that incinerates Asgore and his garden, turning him to dust. After Asgore's death, Clover claims his Boss Soul and makes one last trek to the Barrier where they free the other five Human Souls. At this point, to Clover, justice has been served and the monsters are no more. They leave the Underground for good with the five Human Souls and aren't seen again.

Abilities[]

Unlike Frisk, Clover (for the majority of the game) does not have the highest amount of Determination in the Underground, so Flowey saves the game on their behalf.

Their starting equipment is composed of the Toy Gun and the Worn Hat, which provide no changes to AT or DF and cannot be manually changed. Instead, they can be equipped with different kinds of ammunition or accessories respectively. In Undertale, getting the Yellow flag in the "Ball" game prompts the text that says "Your sure-fire accuracy put an end to the mayhem of 'Ball.'" This suggests that Clover has adequate experience with gunfire or ranged weapons, which is likely the reason for the fight mechanics having a target. Clover is also able to run if the X key is held, similarly to Deltarune's Kris.

As manifested in the Pacifist fight against Ceroba, Clover has the power to fire attacks of their own during the enemy turn (as seen in 'yellow soul modes' during Undertale and Deltarune.) It appears to take on the mechanics found in Deltarune, with smaller bullets able to be fired to clear attacks along with larger, more powerful, charged attacks. Along with this, Clover also gains the ability to 'dash' through what would otherwise be unavoidable attacks. In Genocide, this power manifests as well, but in a much stronger form than during the Pacifist run. Clover's increased LV lets them replace their charged shots with a devastating charged beam. By the time Clover meets Asgore, the laser able to kill Asgore in only one shot, destroying the throne behind him and leaving a massive hole in the wall of the throne room. Finally, during a Neutral run, this power manifests once again during the fight against Flowey.

Also seen in the Pacifist and Genocide fights, Clover has the ability to reach out and access monsters' memories. They use this against Ceroba in Pacifist each time they damage part of her mask, accessing her 'darkest memories' and learning the truth behind her motivation for their SOUL, as well as the truth behind Kanako's fate. In the Genocide route, they use this ability against Martlet, scanning her memories for a reason to hate her, and presumably also a justified reason to kill her. Unlike with the shoot and dash abilities, this does not appear in Neutral.

Possibly growing resistance against the player - In the GENOCIDE ROUTE, Clover might grow in power and even resist control of the player through cutscenes (hinted), at the entrance of the Steamworks gate requiring a code, after killing Ceroba (boss fight) and Starlo in a gun duel or optionally going to the towns for their items. Flowey pops up out of the ground attempting to help Clover but in result of that, Flowey has no idea. Clover quickly draws out their "Wild Revolver" and shoots the passcode pad, without the control of the player. Causing the gate to malfunction and ultimately open itself. Flowey allows it as it just works on it's own. Later on, Clover heads inside there encountering a generator turned off and puzzles to solve from the left to the right to open the front gate. Clover straight up shoots the generator with clear impatience (that did not really work) and Clover walks to the front gate, pointing at the gate demanding Flowey to open the gate. Flowey states not being able to open it, but Clover pushes in, result of that Flowey uses their vines emitted from the ceiling to push the gate downwards. Flowey reminds Clover not to boss them around like that again reminded them about their SAVE FILE, and in response Clover just looks back staring at them.

Trivia[]

  • The name Clover has an association with good luck via the four-leaf clover, which is a reference to how the yellow SOUL heals the player with four-leaf clovers during the Photoshop Flowey fight in Undertale.
    • They share their name with a character from Deltarune.
  • Clover has gone through a total of four sprite changes. It is likely that the fourth is the final version.

  • Unlike how Flowey treats Frisk in Undertale, Flowey is nice to Clover and even saves the game for them. This is because Flowey has manipulated the events of the game to take place, and for his ultimate plan of obtaining the human SOULs, he needs Clover to defeat ASGORE.
  • Prior to Undertale Yellow's full release, it was unknown where Clover fell, as Catty simply says she "found a gun in a dumpster", which could mean that that they either died somewhere in Waterfall, or their belongings were disposed of following their death. In Undertale Yellow, it is shown that Clover essentially sacrifices themself by allowing Ceroba to use their SOUL after defeating her and sparing her in the Pacifist Ending. Later on in the credits, Martlet, Starlo, Dalv, and Ceroba put Clover's belongings they gave to the former four in a smaller version of the U.G. Aviator and let it set sail. The items land in the Waterfall dumpster, where Bratty and Catty would find them between the events of Undertale Yellow and Undertale.
  • Clover's favorite color of pants is neon green.[3]
  • Clover can reach a max HP of 100, unlike Frisk, who reaches a maximum of 99 HP.
  • Clover may be left-handed, supported by a few things throughout the game:
    • In the old intro, they hold the Missing Poster in their left hand.
    • When they pull their gun in the overworld, they hold it in their left hand.
    • While crawling to the wall in the Pacifist ending, they pull themself forward using their left arm.
  • Clover uses they/them pronouns throughout the game, but the specifics of their gender are stated to be open for interpretation.[4]
  • Cramped living conditions bring back unpleasant memories, implying they were either bullied or abused.[5]
  • Interacting with plates in Ceroba's house reminds Clover of their duties back home, suggesting they were tasked with either washing the dishes or cooking.[6]
    • This same interaction also contains dialogue stating that they've already moved on from their family at home.[7]
    • The Sousborg enemy also compliments Clover's talent in cooking, suggesting the latter.[8]
  • Flavor text from the alley behind UG Apartments reveal that:
    • They’re a cat person.
    • They prefer cinnamon over butterscotch.
  • March 17th is Clovers official birthday.[9]
